It was reported in 2017 that Brits are spending on average 37 minutes a day browsing social media whilst at work – equating to three hours and five minutes of the working week.

ID card company Digital ID has created the ‘How Much Your Social Media Addiction Costs Your Boss’ calculator.  Users can enter their annual salary, the amount of time they spend on social media at work and find out how much they’re being paid during the period.

Users can work out their own amount at https://www.digitalid.co.uk/info/social-media-addiction.

The company believes the average UK employee costs their boss £2,300 a year based on the average UK annual salary of £27,600, with the average time spent on social media at work.

“We created this interactive calculator as a way to highlight the impact social media can have in the workplace,” said Digital ID digital marketing manager Adam Bennett.

“On one hand we recognise the importance of social media for businesses and in particular the great things it can do, additionally, we are also aware of how many people access it as part of their job.

“However, this calculator aims to bring attention to the time spent on our personal social media when we should be working, whether it’s checking your Facebook or updating Twitter, we sometimes don’t realise that the time we spend browsing social media actually costs our boss.

“Like many aspects of business, it’s all about balance!”
