Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich to reveal 12th man with tech

A pioneering technology will be introduced at Bayern Munich’s home games which will measure the impact of the fans.

The tech, created by Siemens and Signal Noise, will visualise the relationship between crowd noise and on-pitch action at its Allianz Arena home.

The noise generated by supporters will be captured using acoustic camera technology and mapped onto a 3D model of the ground.

It will help Bayern, who are second behind Borussia Dortmund in the standings but have won the last six Bundesliga titles, identify the most supported players on the pitch.

“There has always been a lot of discussion around the concept of the ’12th man’ and the role that fans play in a typical football game,” said Signal Noise managing director Matthew Falla.

“For the first time we can quantify that by looking at what is happening on the pitch and the noise the 75,000 fans at Allianz Arena make and analysing the emerging patterns.”

The technology could also be used in television coverage down the line.
