Appear Here pops-up among leading UK start-ups
Technology is making it easier to start up a business, with thousands of ideas standing a better chance than ever of becoming viable ventures. We continue our look at 10 of the most promising UK start-ups with Appear Here.
Pop-up ventures such as shops and bars have grown in popularity in recent years as the High Street changes and adapts to a changing shopping environment.
Appear Here was established to help this growing industry to develop by putting landlords in touch with those looking for space.
In the same way that Airbnb owns no accommodation and Uber owns no taxis, Appear Here is becoming a large property company – without owning a building.
Founder Ross Bailey established the company in January 2013, and he was inspired to do so after launching a pop-up shop selling limited edition merchandise for the Queen’s Jubilee the previous year.
He found a number of those who came into the shop were also interested in renting space on a short-term basis, so he put his share of the profits from the venture into launching Appear Here.
So far, the business has undergone two funding rounds. In November 2013 Appear Here secured £1m including cash from Pinterest backer Miroma Ventures.
One year later, $5.7m was raised in a round led by Balderton Capital to support their growth.
During the business’ early days, one of the challenges faced was trying to get landlords on board with the concept.
But this is something Appear Here has easily overcome – and now they work with some of the UK’s biggest landlords including British Land and Hammerson.
They’re now also expanded outside of their home city of London and now offer space in Bath, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool and Manchester too.
International expansion is on the cards, with a recent foray into the French market set to be followed by inroads into major cities around the world.
"Retail is all about getting in front of the best audiences, so we plan to be in all the major retail cities first, such as London, Paris and New York," Bailey told Event Magazine.
"Paris marks the first step in our international expansion, this will be followed by New York.
"Our mission since day one has been to build a global network of the best retail spaces, so people can launch their ideas anywhere in the world."
Appear Here currently works with more than 10,000 brands and businesses to provide space, showing that the future is very bright for this growing start-up.
