Four new directors have been appointed to the board of fast-growing banking start-up Atom Bank.

Cheryl Millington, David Roper, Ian Ormerod and Victoria del Castillo have joined the Durham-based company’s board as directors.

Millington has significant technology, retail and banking expertise and is currently chief digital officer at builders’ merchant and home improvement retailer Travis Perkins.

She previously spent over four years as chief digital officer at Waitrose and chief information and data officer at ASDA. Millington also held a number of senior positions at Halifax, latterly as director group programmes until May 2009.

David Roper has joined as the new chair of Atom’s audit committee, an appointment which was triggered by Bridget Roswell’s move to become chairman of Atom. Roper was an assurance partner with PwC’s financial services practice.

Atom has also appointed Ian Ormerod and Victoria del Castillo from Spanish banking group BBVA.

Ormerod has spent the majority of his career in the financial services sector, where he held senior positions with Abbey National, AXA and Barclays, latterly as managing director of design & digital at the bank.

He is currently head of new digital business at BBVA, a role he has held since April 2018, and is also co-founder at software company Pobi.

He has joined Atom as a non-executive director and told BusinessCloud he was “very excited by what is an amazing company led by a very talented management team”.

Victoria del Castillo has been with BBVA for 17.5 years and is currently managing director of M&A and strategy at the group.

Atom’s chairman Bridget Rosewell said all four directors bring “significant expertise and incisive challenge” to the business.
