Today we can reveal the inaugural Northern Ireland Tech 50 – our ranking of the country’s most innovative technology companies.

PlotBox tops the list of outstanding tech creators after securing backing from both an independent judging panel and our readers.

The Ballymena-based cemetery management application was developed hand-in-hand with clients on the West Coast of the US after coming through the prestigious 500 Startups accelerator in San Francisco.

It topped the ranking ahead of axial3D, which gives clinicians access to patient-specific 3D-printed models.

It’s a fantastic validation of the innovation that we are bringing to the death care space,” Neil Sherrin, VP Business Development for North America for PlotBox, told BusinessCloud after learning of its no.1 spot.

Belfast companies made up the remainder of the top 10, with lip-reading technology firm Liopa third ahead of connected device security company Angoka and tech giant Kainos, which develops digital transformation platforms.

AquaQ Analytics, See.SenseNeurovalens, B-Secur and Re-Vana Therapeutics completed the top 10. Thirty-seven of the top 50 are based in Belfast.

BusinessCloud called on its readers to vote for companies from a 70-strong shortlist and saw 3,100 votes pour in.

A combination of these votes and choices from an expert judging panel determined the top 50.

The judging panel was comprised of:

  • Gary Davidson, entrepreneur engagement manager (Northern Ireland), Tech Nation
  • Anne Dornan, Enterprise Network Manager, QUBIS
  • Simon Bailie, CEO, Digital DNA
  • Kim Johnston, VP UK and Ireland, Q Agency
